JOY IN MUSIC PIANO STUDIO POLICIES                                                   FALL 2026

Student Tuition and Fees: The studio operates year-round, with a total of 32 lessons from September-June, and flexible scheduling during the summer. Our schedule is organized in two terms, Sept-Jan and Feb-June. Payment by the term, which includes a small discount, is preferred and is due at the first lesson of each term. (A monthly payment plan is available upon request. Payment by the month consists of 5 equal payments per term, to be paid by the first of each month.  Summer information is distributed in the spring.)

Tuition Rates: 60-minute lessons: $1140 term or $230/month

                              40-minute lessons:  $752 term or $152/month

Fees:                   Registration fee: $40 once a year (May)

Payment Options: Cash, Check, Zelle (207-210-4214) or CASH APP (available for iPhone or Android phone). Checks (written to Alice Peterson) can be mailed to 34 Garfield Street, Westbrook ME 04092.

The registration fee of $40 is paid when you start lessons, and once a year thereafter. This fee is billed in May and reserves a spot in the fall schedule. If you do not reserve a spot in the spring, it is paid with your first tuition payment in the fall. Additional costs will be incurred for music books needed for lessons (est. $35-$50 per term). These can be ordered by the student or by the teacher with reimbursement from the student.

Your tuition reserves a time slot for you and pays for music instruction time, lesson preparation, curriculum development, event planning, studio communication and recordkeeping, studio rental, office and teaching supplies and other studio expenses. These expenses are incurred whether you attend your lesson or not. For this reason, there are no refunds for missed lessons.

Rescheduling: When weather hinders travel, lessons will move online (or phone). Absences because of sickness can be rescheduled. Rescheduled lessons are not guaranteed otherwise. However, life happens, so we have built some flexibility into the weekly schedule and also set aside 2 days each term as flex days. If you have travel plans that interfere with lessons, let me know as early as possible and we’ll look at the possibilities.

Discontinuing lessons: Every student will stop taking lessons at some point. Please make this decision thoughtfully in discussion with your teacher.

Instrument: Students need a full size, weighted key instrument to progress.

Fingernails: Fingernails should not extend beyond the end of the finger.

Practice Guidelines: Learning how to practice is part of your musical journey. Lessons will include developing practice habits which you can use at home..  My goal is to help you maximize the daily piano time you have, whether it is 20 minutes or an hour. Learning to play the piano is a journey, not a race--enjoy it!

Events: The studio provides occasional social/education gatherings for students, as well as opportunities to share music informally at retirement homes at least twice a year.

*LIMITED PART-TIME OPENINGS may be available for one-hour lessons for adult students only who cannot commit to weekly lessons.

Part-time students are enrolled in one-hour lessons and will share a time slot with another student. Eight lessons are scheduled in a 5-month term.  The exact dates of each student’s lessons are communicated prior to the beginning of each term.

60 min lessons: $675 term or $137/month

$40 registration yearly

A few part-time students who started lessons before 2023 are grandfathered into 40-minute time slots.  Please see me for tuition information.

Some adults wish for short term lessons to accomplish a particular purpose. This can occasionally be arranged ($50 per 40 minutes/$75 per 60 minutes).
